The Wichita Kansas Temple is the first temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be built in the state of Kansas. Located in north Wichita, the temple serves Latter-day Saints throughout Kansas and portions of neighboring states. Though one of the Church's smaller temples, it represents a historic milestone for members who previously traveled many hours to worship in Oklahoma, Nebraska, or Missouri.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Wichita Kansas Temple during the April 2022 General Conference on April 3, 2022. At the time of the announcement, Kansas was home to more than 38,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in approximately 75 congregations. The announcement marked the first temple ever planned for the state.
On June 20, 2023, the Church announced the temple site in the Moorings Plaza development in northern Wichita. The official exterior rendering was released on July 22, 2024, revealing an elegant design featuring a central tower. Groundbreaking services were held on September 7, 2024, with Elder Steven R. Bangerter, First Counselor in the North America Central Area Presidency, presiding.
Construction progressed quickly, and in May 2026 the First Presidency announced the public open house and dedication dates. The public open house is scheduled for September 24 through October 10, 2026 (excluding Sundays and October 3), and Elder Patrick Kearon of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will dedicate the temple on November 1, 2026.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
The Wichita Kansas Temple is one of the Church's newest smaller temple designs, containing approximately 9,950 square feet. Despite its modest size, it includes one instruction room, one sealing room, and one baptistry, allowing members to receive all essential temple ordinances close to home.
The temple sits on a 6.42-acre site at 2550 W Harborlight Street in north Wichita. Its elegant single attached central tower provides a graceful focal point while complementing the surrounding neighborhood.
Perhaps the temple's greatest distinction is its significance to Church members across Kansas. For generations, many members drove several hours to attend temples in neighboring states. The Wichita Kansas Temple dramatically reduces travel time and fulfills a long-held hope for a temple within Kansas.
