A Brief History

President Russell M. Nelson announced the West Jordan Utah Temple during the April 2024 General Conference on April 7, 2024. The announcement reflected the continued growth of the Church in northern Utah, where increasing membership has led to the construction of several new temples throughout the Wasatch Front. On August 26, 2024, the Church announced the temple site at the northwest corner of 5600 West and 7000 South in West Jordan. The property spans approximately 16.10 acres, providing ample room for the temple, landscaping, and supporting facilities. An official exterior rendering was released on February 10, 2025, revealing an elegant design featuring a tall central spire and light-colored stone exterior. (churchofjesuschristtemples.org)

Groundbreaking services were held on April 12, 2025, with Elder Kevin R. Duncan of the Presidency of the Seventy presiding. Since then, construction has progressed steadily. During 2026, crews completed much of the structural framing and continued exterior work as the temple began taking shape. Open house and dedication dates have not yet been announced. What Makes This Temple Unique?

The West Jordan Utah Temple is being constructed as a single-story temple containing approximately 85,000 square feet. Plans include four instruction rooms, four sealing rooms, and one baptistry, allowing the temple to efficiently serve the large temple district in southwest Salt Lake County. The temple sits on a spacious 16.10-acre property and features a single attached central spire, creating a striking landmark that will be visible throughout the surrounding area. Its convenient location near major roadways will provide easy access for members living in West Jordan, South Jordan, Herriman, Kearns, Copperton, and neighboring communities. The addition of the West Jordan Utah Temple continues the remarkable growth of temple construction along Utah's Wasatch Front. Together with nearby temples in Taylorsville, Oquirrh Mountain, Saratoga Springs, Syracuse, and others, it will help accommodate the increasing demand for temple worship in one of the Church's fastest-growing regions.
