Why Does God Call Local Church Leaders?
Heavenly Father is a God of order and organization.
Throughout the scriptures, the Lord has called individuals to lead, teach, and care for His people. That pattern continues today.
Bishops, stake presidents, and other local leaders are ordinary people who voluntarily give their time to serve. They are not paid for their service, nor are they expected to be perfect.
Instead, they are called by inspiration and rely on the Lord to help them fulfill their responsibilities.
One of the greatest blessings of having local leaders is that every member has someone to turn to for guidance, encouragement, and support. Whether someone is preparing for the temple, facing a difficult trial, or simply seeking spiritual direction, local leaders are there to minister in the Savior's name.
What Does It Mean to Sustain Local Leaders?
To sustain means to support.
We sustain our local leaders by being willing to serve, accepting assignments when possible, and supporting the work they have been called to do.
We also sustain them by praying for them, treating them with kindness and respect, and recognizing that they are doing their best to follow the Lord's guidance.
Since local leaders are imperfect, they may not always have every answer immediately. Like all disciples of Jesus Christ, they seek revelation, learn, and grow as they serve.
When we sustain our leaders, we demonstrate our trust in the Lord, who called them.
What If I Disagree with a Leader's Decision?
Because local leaders are mortal, there may be times when we do not fully understand a decision they make.
In those moments, the Savior invites us to respond with humility, patience, and charity.
If you have sincere questions or concerns, it is appropriate to respectfully speak with your leader and seek greater understanding. Honest communication, offered in a spirit of love and respect, can strengthen relationships and build unity.
Sustaining a leader does not require believing they are perfect. It means supporting them in their calling, praying for them, and trusting that the Lord can guide His servants as they seek His will.
Why Does This Matter in Temple Preparation?
Temple covenants invite us to become more like Jesus Christ.
Part of that discipleship is learning to work together in unity as members of His Church.
By sustaining our local leaders, we help create an environment where the Spirit can guide the work of the Lord and bless individuals and families.
