The Teton River Idaho Temple will become the ninth temple in Idaho and the second temple in Rexburg. Located on the north side of Rexburg, the temple is currently under construction and will serve Latter-day Saints throughout eastern Idaho. Once completed, it will help accommodate the growing number of temple patrons in one of the Church's strongest membership areas.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Teton River Idaho Temple during the October 2021 General Conference on October 3, 2021. Idaho is home to more than 460,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the announcement reflected the continued growth of the Church throughout eastern Idaho.
On September 19, 2022, the Church announced the temple site northwest of 2000 North and Salem Road in Rexburg on a 16.6-acre property. The official exterior rendering was released on February 20, 2024, and groundbreaking services were held on June 1, 2024, with Elder Ricardo P. Giménez, Second Counselor in the North America Central Area Presidency, presiding.
Construction has progressed rapidly. During 2025, crews completed much of the foundation and began erecting the structural steel. In June 2026, the temple reached a major milestone when its central spire was lifted into place, making the building instantly recognizable across Rexburg. Exterior cladding continues as construction moves toward completion. An open house and dedication date have not yet been announced.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Teton River Idaho Temple is its location. It will become the second temple in Rexburg, situated only about 3½ miles from the Rexburg Idaho Temple. At the time of its announcement, Rexburg became the smallest city in the world to have two temples, highlighting the extraordinary concentration of faithful Church members in the area, including thousands of students attending Brigham Young University–Idaho.
The temple is being constructed as a three-story building containing approximately 100,000 square feet. Plans include four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and one baptistry, making it one of the larger temples currently under construction. The exterior features a single attached central spire, and the temple sits at an elevation of 4,876 feet, with beautiful views toward the Teton Mountain Range on clear days.
Another interesting feature is its proximity to Teton River Temple Street, the road named specifically for the temple. The site also lies near the route travelers take toward Yellowstone National Park, making the temple highly visible to both residents and visitors.
