The Tampa Florida Temple will become the fourth temple in Florida and will serve Latter-day Saints throughout the Tampa Bay region and Florida's Gulf Coast. Located in Riverview, Florida, the temple is currently under construction following its groundbreaking in 2025. Once completed, it will significantly reduce travel for members living throughout west-central Florida.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Tampa Florida Temple during the April 2022 General Conference on April 3, 2022. At the time of the announcement, Florida was home to more than 160,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in over 260 congregations. The temple was announced as Florida's fourth temple, joining Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Tallahassee.
The Church initially announced a site in Valrico, Florida, on October 31, 2022. However, on April 22, 2024, a new and larger 12-acre site was selected at 9445 Camden Fields Parkway in Riverview. The updated location provides additional space for the temple complex and future development. An official exterior rendering was released on March 20, 2023, with the design adapted for the new property.
Groundbreaking services were held on August 23, 2025, with Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles presiding. Construction has progressed steadily since then. During 2026, crews completed the foundation, began installing precast concrete panels, and started erecting the temple's structural steel frame, marking significant milestones toward completion. Open house and dedication dates have not yet been announced.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
The Tampa Florida Temple is being constructed as a 29,000-square-foot, single-story temple featuring a single attached central tower. The interior will include two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry, following one of the Church's modern temple floor plans designed to efficiently serve growing temple districts.
The temple sits on a spacious 12-acre property in Riverview and will include an adjacent distribution center and supporting facilities. Its location provides convenient access from Interstate 75 and major roadways, making it accessible to members from Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Brandon, Lakeland, Sarasota, and surrounding communities.
Another interesting aspect of the project is its relocation from the originally announced Valrico site. The Riverview property provides greater flexibility for future development while maintaining easy access for members throughout west-central Florida.
