The Tacoma Washington Temple will become the fifth temple announced for Washington and will serve Latter-day Saints throughout the greater Tacoma, Federal Way, and south Puget Sound region. Although named for Tacoma, the temple will be constructed in Federal Way, Washington, on a highly visible site near Interstate 5. The temple is currently in the planning and approval phase, with an official site selected and an exterior rendering released.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Tacoma Washington Temple during the October 2022 General Conference on October 2, 2022. At the time of the announcement, Washington was home to more than 280,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in nearly 525 congregations, reflecting the Church's continued growth throughout the Pacific Northwest.
On September 16, 2024, the Church announced the temple site at 1405 South 364th Way in Federal Way. The selected property spans approximately 11.6 acres, and plans call for a multistory temple with an accompanying utility building. The official exterior rendering was released on December 23, 2024, providing members with their first look at the temple's elegant granite-clad design.
As of today, the temple remains in the planning and approval phase. A traffic impact analysis was published in 2025 as part of the local planning process, but no groundbreaking date has yet been announced.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
Although named after Tacoma, the temple will actually be located in Federal Way, providing convenient access for members living throughout Pierce County, southern King County, and the surrounding Puget Sound communities. The location near Interstate 5 will make the temple easily accessible for members traveling from across western Washington.
Current plans call for a temple of approximately 38,000 square feet featuring four instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The exterior will be finished in granite and crowned by a 186-foot single attached end spire, creating a prominent landmark visible from nearby roadways.
The temple will complement the existing Seattle Washington Temple while helping meet the needs of the growing number of Latter-day Saints throughout western Washington. It joins the Seattle, Spokane, Columbia River, and Moses Lake temples as part of the expanding temple network serving the state.
