The Sunnyvale California Temple will become one of the newest temples in California, serving Latter-day Saints throughout Silicon Valley and the South Bay. Located in Sunnyvale, California, the temple is currently in the planning and approval phase. Once completed, it will significantly reduce travel for members who currently attend the Oakland California Temple and other nearby temples.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the temple during the April 2023 General Conference on April 2, 2023. At the time of the announcement, it was known as the San Jose California Temple, reflecting the metropolitan area it would serve. California was home to nearly 730,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in approximately 1,150 congregations.
On August 28, 2023, the Church announced the temple site at 771 West Fremont Avenue in Sunnyvale. The selected 4.73-acre property is the location of an existing meetinghouse, which will be redeveloped into a temple complex that also includes a distribution center.
The official exterior rendering was released on November 11, 2024, providing the first look at the temple's elegant design. Then, on December 15, 2025, the First Presidency officially renamed the San Jose California Temple to the Sunnyvale California Temple, reflecting its actual location. As of today, planning continues and no groundbreaking date has been announced.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
The Sunnyvale California Temple will become the first temple in Silicon Valley, serving one of the world's largest technology hubs. Its location places it within easy reach of communities including Sunnyvale, San Jose, Santa Clara, Cupertino, Mountain View, and many neighboring cities.
Plans call for a 30,000-square-foot, single-story temple featuring a single attached central tower. The temple will include two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry, providing a modern, efficient design while maintaining the sacred atmosphere found in temples around the world. An accompanying distribution center will also be located on the property.
Another unique aspect of the project is that the temple will be constructed on the site of an existing Church meetinghouse, allowing the Church to continue serving the area while making efficient use of the property.
