The Summit New Jersey Temple will become the first temple built in New Jersey. Announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2024 General Conference, the temple marks a historic milestone for Latter-day Saints in the Garden State. For decades, Church members in New Jersey have traveled to the Manhattan New York Temple or the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple to participate in temple worship. The future temple in Summit will bring those blessings much closer to home for thousands of members.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Summit New Jersey Temple on October 6, 2024, during the closing session of the 194th Semiannual General Conference. It was one of 17 new temples announced that day, continuing the Church's unprecedented expansion of temple building throughout the world.
The temple will serve approximately 35,000 Latter-day Saints in more than 60 congregations throughout New Jersey. Missionaries first preached the restored gospel in New Jersey in 1832, and the announcement fulfilled the hopes of generations of members who have long desired a temple within their own state.
As of today, the Summit New Jersey Temple remains in the planning and approval phase. The Church has not yet announced an official site, released an exterior rendering, or scheduled a groundbreaking ceremony. Additional details will be shared as planning progresses.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
The Summit New Jersey Temple will become the first house of the Lord in New Jersey, making it one of the most historically significant temple announcements in the northeastern United States. Once completed, members who have traditionally traveled to temples in Manhattan or Philadelphia will have a temple much closer to home.
Although no architectural details have been released, every newly announced temple is designed to reflect the sacred purpose of temple worship while complementing its surrounding community. The Church has not yet announced the temple's size, architectural style, or interior features.
