The Springfield Missouri Temple will be the third temple built in Missouri and will serve Latter-day Saints throughout southern Missouri, northern Arkansas, and the Ozarks region. Located in southeast Springfield, the temple is currently under construction following its groundbreaking in 2026. With its peaceful rural setting and classic design, the temple will provide a sacred place of worship for thousands of members across the region.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Springfield Missouri Temple during the April 2023 General Conference on April 2, 2023. It was the third temple announced for Missouri, joining the St. Louis Missouri Temple and the Kansas City Missouri Temple. The announcement reflected the continued growth of the Church throughout the state, which is home to more than 80,000 Latter-day Saints.
On June 24, 2024, the Church announced the temple site at 2720 East Farm Road 188 in Springfield. The selected property spans approximately 38 acres, with plans for a 29,000-square-foot, single-story temple featuring a central spire. An official exterior rendering was released on December 16, 2024, giving members their first look at the temple's design.
Groundbreaking services were held on June 6, 2026, with Elder Aroldo B. Cavalcante of the United States Southeast Area Presidency presiding. During the dedicatory prayer, he described the future temple as a "lighthouse" that would bring peace, hope, and courage to both Church members and the surrounding community. Construction is now underway, with open house and dedication dates to be announced in the future.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
The Springfield Missouri Temple is being constructed on a beautiful 38-acre property in southeast Springfield, providing ample room for landscaped grounds and future growth. The surrounding Ozark landscape offers a peaceful setting that complements the temple's sacred purpose.
Plans call for a 29,000-square-foot, single-story temple featuring a single attached central spire. The temple will include two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry, following one of the Church's efficient modern temple designs while still incorporating architectural details that reflect southwest Missouri.
Church leaders have emphasized that the temple will become a spiritual landmark for the region, reducing travel for many members who currently attend temples in St. Louis or Kansas City while serving communities throughout southern Missouri and neighboring states.
