A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Roanoke Virginia Temple during the October 2023 General Conference on October 1, 2023. It was one of 20 new temples announced during the conference, continuing the Church's unprecedented expansion of temple construction around the world.
The announcement came only a few months after the dedication of the Richmond Virginia Temple and followed the earlier announcement of the Winchester Virginia Temple, highlighting the continued growth of the Church throughout the Commonwealth. At the time of the announcement, Virginia was home to more than 97,000 members in over 210 congregations.
As of now, the Church has not announced an official temple site, has not released an exterior rendering, and has not announced a groundbreaking date. Planning and approval efforts are ongoing, with additional information expected as the project moves forward.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
The Roanoke Virginia Temple will become the first temple in southwestern Virginia, bringing temple worship much closer to members living in the Blue Ridge Mountains region. Many members currently travel to the Richmond Virginia Temple, Washington D.C. Temple, or temples in neighboring states. The new temple will greatly reduce travel times for thousands of faithful members.
Roanoke is known as the "Star City of the South" and sits among the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, making it one of the most scenic locations announced for a future temple. Although architectural details have not yet been released, many members look forward to seeing a design that complements the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains.
