The Richmond Virginia Temple is the first temple built in Virginia and the 177th dedicated temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Located in Glen Allen, just northwest of Richmond, the temple serves members throughout central and southern Virginia. A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Richmond Virginia Temple during the April 2018 General Conference on April 1, 2018. The announcement was especially meaningful for Latter-day Saints throughout Virginia, who had long traveled to the Washington D.C. Temple to participate in sacred ordinances, often navigating heavy traffic and lengthy travel times.
The Church released the temple's exterior renderings in August 2019, and groundbreaking services were held on April 11, 2020. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony was significantly smaller than originally planned, with Elder Randall K. Bennett presiding over the site dedication and groundbreaking.
Following construction, the temple welcomed visitors during a 21-day public open house from March 25 through April 15, 2023. Thousands toured the temple before President Dallin H. Oaks dedicated it on May 7, 2023, making it the 177th dedicated temple of the Church.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
The Richmond Virginia Temple is unique because it was carefully designed to reflect Virginia's rich architectural heritage. The exterior is clad in Moleanos limestone from Portugal and incorporates Georgian, Federal, and Jeffersonian architectural styles. Decorative elements include dogwood flowers, Virginia's official state flower, along with interlocking diamond motifs inspired by historic buildings throughout Virginia, including Williamsburg, Monticello, and the University of Virginia.
The temple contains approximately 39,202 square feet and features four instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and a baptistry. A graceful 164-foot, 9-inch spire topped with an angel Moroni rises above the surrounding wooded landscape. Inside, richly colored art glass and custom artwork celebrate Virginia's history, culture, and natural beauty.
The beautifully landscaped 12-acre site features native Virginia plants, including dogwood, magnolia, white oak, Virginia bluebells, and boxwood, creating a peaceful atmosphere that complements the temple's historic architectural style.
Visiting the Temple
The Richmond Virginia Temple is located at 10915 Staples Mill Road in Glen Allen, Virginia. The temple does not have a visitors' center, arrival center, or patron housing. An on-site distribution center is available for temple patrons. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the beautifully landscaped grounds surrounding the temple, which provide a peaceful setting for reflection and photographs.
