The Rexburg Idaho Temple is the third temple built in Idaho and the 125th dedicated temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Located on a hill overlooking Brigham Young University–Idaho, the temple has become one of the most recognizable landmarks in eastern Idaho. Its five-story design, soaring spire, and beautiful views of the Upper Snake River Valley make it one of the Church's most distinctive temples.
A Brief History
President Gordon B. Hinckley announced the Rexburg Idaho Temple on December 12, 2003, just a few years after Ricks College became Brigham Young University–Idaho. The announcement reflected the tremendous growth of both the university and the surrounding region, where Church membership had increased rapidly.
The temple site was announced on February 15, 2004, on a prominent hill just south of the BYU–Idaho campus. Groundbreaking services were held on July 30, 2005, with Elder John H. Groberg presiding. Unlike most temple groundbreaking ceremonies, this event was open to the public, and more than 8,000 people attended.
Following a 19-day public open house from January 7–26, 2008, more than 200,000 visitors toured the temple. The original dedication was postponed one week following the passing of President Gordon B. Hinckley. On February 10, 2008, President Thomas S. Monson dedicated the temple, making it the first temple he dedicated as President of the Church and the 125th dedicated temple overall.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
One of the Rexburg Idaho Temple's most unique features is its location immediately adjacent to BYU–Idaho. Along with the temples near BYU in Provo and BYU–Hawaii in Laie, it is one of only a few Church-owned universities with a temple next to campus. The temple has become an important part of student life for thousands of young adults each year.
The temple contains approximately 57,504 square feet and includes four instruction rooms, five sealing rooms, and a baptistry. Its exterior is finished with precast concrete panels featuring a white quartz ("China White") finish, giving the temple its bright appearance throughout the year. The single attached spire rises 168 feet 9 inches above the hillside and is topped with a gold-leafed angel Moroni statue.
Inside, beautiful murals painted by Idaho artist Leon Parson depict the wildlife and landscapes of the Upper Snake River Valley. A wheat motif appears throughout the temple's art glass, symbolizing the area's rich agricultural heritage. Fine materials from around the world—including wood imported from Africa and stone from Israel—were used throughout the building.
Visiting the Temple
The Rexburg Idaho Temple is located at 750 South 2nd East in Rexburg, Idaho. The temple does not have a visitors' center, arrival center, patron housing, or an on-site distribution center. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own temple clothing. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the beautifully landscaped grounds and peaceful garden west of the temple, which offers excellent views of both the temple and the surrounding valley.
