Querétaro Mexico Temple: History, Architecture, and Travel Guide

Where It's Located

The Querétaro Mexico Temple is being built at Prolongación Tecnológico Norte 150 in the Colonia San Pablo neighborhood of Querétaro, Mexico. The 3.58-acre property is located across from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, north of Querétaro's historic center. The temple will sit at an elevation of approximately 5,954 feet (1,815 meters) above sea level.

Querétaro is one of central Mexico's most historically significant cities. Its historic center is recognized by UNESCO for its distinctive colonial and Baroque architecture, including colorful buildings, historic churches, convents, plazas, and elaborate stonework. That heritage makes Querétaro an especially interesting setting for a new temple.

Getting There

The temple is located roughly 135 miles (217 kilometers) northwest of Mexico City. Travelers from the United States can fly into Querétaro Intercontinental Airport (QRO) or connect through Mexico City International Airport (MEX) before continuing by ground transportation to Querétaro.

For visitors combining a temple trip with sightseeing, Querétaro's historic center offers an especially worthwhile addition to the itinerary. The city's architecture reflects centuries of Mexican history, with Baroque and other historic styles prominently represented throughout the center.

A Bit of History

The Querétaro Mexico Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson on April 4, 2021, during the 191st Annual General Conference. It was announced as Mexico's 15th temple. At the time, Querétaro was home to roughly one million residents and was already an important center of population and commerce in central Mexico.

The temple site and official exterior rendering were announced on December 7, 2021. Plans called for a two-story temple measuring approximately 27,500 square feet (2,555 square meters).

Groundbreaking services were held on January 7, 2023, with Elder Adrián Ochoa, then serving as first counselor in the Mexico Area Presidency, presiding. Construction subsequently began on the temple and an adjoining ancillary building.

Construction Progress

The Querétaro Mexico Temple is currently under construction. As of the latest 2026 updates, exterior construction has advanced substantially.

Crews have been installing the final exterior precast panels, while the central tower and its steel framework have taken shape. By June 2026, colorful tiled sections intended for the temple's cupola had been staged on the property, art-glass windows were being installed, decorative iron grilles had been added, and palm trees were being planted throughout the grounds.

The temple's open house and dedication dates have not yet been announced.

Design and Architecture

The Querétaro Mexico Temple will contain approximately 27,500 square feet and feature two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Its most prominent architectural feature is a single attached central tower.

The design draws inspiration from the architectural character of Querétaro itself. The city's historic architecture is particularly known for its Baroque monuments, pink stone, ornate decorative elements, and distinctive arches. The temple's developing design incorporates local architectural influences while maintaining the recognizable appearance and sacred function of a Latter-day Saint temple.

One particularly distinctive feature is the temple's domed central steeple and scalloped parapet above the main entrance. The colorful cupola sections being installed on the tower will add another visual connection to the architectural traditions of the region.

What to Watch for Next

With the exterior nearing completion, the next major milestones will include completion of the central tower and cupola, installation of remaining exterior and interior finishes, landscaping, and final preparations for temple operations.

After construction is completed, the Church is expected to announce the dates for the public open house and dedication. Those dates have not yet been released.

Final Thoughts

The Querétaro Mexico Temple is shaping up to be a particularly distinctive addition to Mexico's growing collection of temples. Its location in a city famous for historic Mexican architecture gives the temple a fascinating cultural setting, while its central tower, domed steeple, and colorful cupola give the building a distinctive appearance of its own.

For Latter-day Saints traveling through central Mexico, the future temple will provide an opportunity to combine temple worship with a visit to one of Mexico's most historically significant cities. With construction now well advanced, the long-awaited opening of the Querétaro Mexico Temple is getting closer.
