Announcement
The Puerto Montt Chile Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2024 General Conference on October 6, 2024. It will become the sixth temple in Chile and the southernmost temple in Latin America. The announcement reflects the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chile, where more than 600,000 members worship in over 570 congregations throughout the country.
Located in the scenic Los Lagos Region, Puerto Montt serves as the gateway to Chilean Patagonia and is home to members who have historically traveled long distances to attend temples in Concepción, Santiago, or Antofagasta. The new temple will make temple worship much more accessible for members throughout southern Chile.
Current Status
The Puerto Montt Chile Temple is currently in the planning and approval phase.
On January 26, 2026, the Church announced the temple site. The temple will be constructed on a 5.8-acre (2.3-hectare) property located at Avenida Chamiza Lote 2 2015 in the Pelluco neighborhood of Puerto Montt. Plans call for a single-story temple of approximately 18,500 square feet (1,719 square meters).
At this time:
- No official exterior rendering has been released.
- No groundbreaking date has been announced.
What to Watch for Next
The next major milestone will be the release of the temple's official exterior rendering, followed by the announcement of a groundbreaking ceremony. After construction begins, members can look forward to updates as the temple progresses through structural construction, interior finishing, landscaping, and eventually the announcement of public open house and dedication dates.
Nearest Operating Temple
Until the Puerto Montt Chile Temple is completed, members in southern Chile generally attend the Concepción Chile Temple, although some members from the far south may travel to other temples depending on their location. Once the Puerto Montt Temple is dedicated, it will significantly reduce travel for Latter-day Saints throughout Chile's southern regions, including the Los Lagos, Aysén, and Magallanes areas.
Final Thoughts
The Puerto Montt Chile Temple represents another important milestone in the remarkable growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chile. As the nation's sixth temple and the southernmost temple in Latin America, it will bring sacred temple blessings much closer to thousands of faithful members living in one of South America's most beautiful regions. Although still in the planning stage, the announcement of the temple site marks exciting progress toward the day when generations of Latter-day Saints in southern Chile will worship in a temple close to home.
