Puebla Mexico Temple: History, Architecture, and Travel Guide

Where It's Located

The Puebla Mexico Temple is located at Av. 15 de Mayo #719, Col. Los Cipreses, C.P. 72114, Puebla, Puebla, Mexico. Situated in the northwestern part of Puebla near a major highway interchange, the temple sits on a beautifully landscaped 6.82-acre (2.8-hectare) property. The grounds include a distribution center, though there is no visitors' center, arrival center, or patron housing.

Getting There

The nearest major airport is Hermanos Serdán International Airport (PBC), located approximately 18 miles (29 kilometers) northwest of the temple. Many travelers from the United States also choose to fly into Mexico City International Airport (MEX), about 85 miles (137 kilometers) away, and then drive or take ground transportation to Puebla. From either airport, the temple is easily accessible by car, with travel times ranging from 30 minutes from Puebla Airport to about 2 hours from Mexico City, depending on traffic.

A Bit of History

The Puebla Mexico Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2018 General Conference on October 7, 2018. It became the 191st operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the fourteenth temple in Mexico, and the first temple in the state of Puebla. At the time of the announcement, Mexico was home to nearly 1.5 million Church members, with eleven stakes and two districts located in the state of Puebla alone.

Groundbreaking services were held on November 30, 2019, with Elder Arnulfo Valenzuela, President of the Mexico Area, presiding. The temple serves more than 50,000 members throughout Puebla and neighboring regions. Following a public open house from March 29 through April 20, 2024, attended by more than 60,000 visitors, Elder Gerrit W. Gong dedicated the temple on May 19, 2024.

Design and Architecture

The Puebla Mexico Temple contains approximately 35,865 square feet (3,332 square meters) of floor space. Its exterior is finished with precast concrete panels and features a single attached end tower topped with an angel Moroni statue. Rising to approximately 111 feet 6 inches (34 meters), the temple is an elegant landmark visible from much of the surrounding area.

Inside, the temple includes four instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Beautiful landscaping, native plants, and peaceful walkways surround the temple, creating a quiet atmosphere for worship and reflection. The temple serves members from 20 stakes and 3 districts across the Mexican states of Puebla, Tlaxcala, eastern Morelos, and northern Oaxaca.

Final Thoughts

The Puebla Mexico Temple marks an important milestone in the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in central Mexico. As the first temple in the state of Puebla, it has brought sacred temple ordinances much closer to tens of thousands of faithful members who previously traveled greater distances to worship in the house of the Lord. Its beautiful design, convenient location, and growing temple district make it a significant spiritual landmark for members throughout the region.
