Porto Portugal Temple: What We Know So Far

Announcement

The Porto Portugal Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2024 General Conference on October 6, 2024. It will become the second temple in Portugal, joining the Lisbon Portugal Temple, which was dedicated in 2019. The announcement reflects the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Portugal, where tens of thousands of members worship in stakes and districts across the country.

Located in northern Portugal, Porto is the nation's second-largest city and serves as a major cultural, economic, and transportation hub. A temple in Porto will significantly reduce travel for members living throughout northern Portugal, allowing many families to participate in temple worship much more frequently.

Current Status

The Porto Portugal Temple is currently in the planning and approval phase. At this time, no official temple site has been announced, no exterior rendering has been released, and no groundbreaking date has been scheduled. Church leaders continue working through the planning process before additional details are made public.

What to Watch for Next

The next major milestone will be the announcement of the temple site in the Porto metropolitan area. Following that announcement, the Church is expected to release an official exterior rendering and later announce a groundbreaking ceremony. After construction is completed, public open house and temple dedication dates will be announced.

Nearest Operating Temple

Until the Porto Portugal Temple is completed, members in northern Portugal continue traveling to the Lisbon Portugal Temple, located approximately 195 miles (315 kilometers) to the south. Once the Porto Temple is dedicated, it will greatly reduce travel time for members throughout northern Portugal while also serving many Saints living near the border with northwestern Spain.

Final Thoughts

The Porto Portugal Temple represents another important milestone in the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Portugal. As the country's second temple, it will bring sacred temple ordinances closer to thousands of faithful members living in northern Portugal and neighboring areas. Although the project is still in its earliest planning stages, the announcement demonstrates the Church's ongoing commitment to making temple worship more accessible throughout Europe.
