Porto Alegre Brazil Temple: History, Architecture, and Travel Guide

Where It's Located

The Porto Alegre Brazil Temple is located at Rua General Salvador Pinheiro, 50, Vila Jardim, 91320-240, Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Perched on a hillside overlooking the city and the Guaíba River, the temple sits on a beautifully landscaped 2-acre (0.8-hectare) property. The grounds include an arrival center, patron housing, and a distribution center, though there is no visitors' center open to the public.

Getting There

The nearest major airport is Salgado Filho International Airport (POA), located about 8 miles (13 kilometers) northwest of the temple. Travelers from the United States typically reach Porto Alegre through connecting flights from major Brazilian hubs such as São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, with additional connections available through cities like Panama City, Santiago, or Buenos Aires. From the airport, the temple is generally a 20- to 30-minute drive, depending on traffic.

A Bit of History

The Porto Alegre Brazil Temple was announced by President Gordon B. Hinckley on September 30, 1997, during General Conference. It became the 102nd operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the third temple built in Brazil, following the São Paulo and Recife temples. Before its construction, many members in southern Brazil traveled great distances to attend temple ordinances in other parts of the country.

Groundbreaking services were held on May 2, 1998, with President James E. Faust, Second Counselor in the First Presidency, presiding. During the ceremony, President Faust emphasized the sacrifices members make to build temples and shared inspiring stories of Saints who donated even their gold dental fillings to help construct temples in South America. Following a public open house from December 2–9, 2000, President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the temple on December 17, 2000.

Design and Architecture

The Porto Alegre Brazil Temple contains approximately 13,325 square feet (1,238 square meters) of floor space. Its exterior is finished with Cotton White granite from Ceará State, Brazil, and features a single attached spire topped with an angel Moroni statue. The temple's elevated location provides sweeping views over Porto Alegre and the surrounding landscape, making it one of the most scenic temple sites in southern Brazil.

Inside, the temple includes two progressive instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The peaceful grounds, beautiful landscaping, and hillside setting create a quiet atmosphere for worship and reflection, serving members throughout southern Brazil as well as neighboring countries in parts of South America.

Final Thoughts

The Porto Alegre Brazil Temple stands as an important milestone in the growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in southern Brazil. As the nation's third temple, it brought sacred temple ordinances much closer to thousands of faithful members who had previously traveled long distances to worship in the house of the Lord. More than two decades after its dedication, the temple continues to bless generations of families while serving as a beautiful symbol of faith overlooking the city of Porto Alegre.
