Announcement
The Port Vila Vanuatu Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2020 General Conference on October 4, 2020. It will become the first temple in Vanuatu, marking a historic milestone for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the island nation. Vanuatu is home to multiple stakes and districts, and the announcement fulfilled the hopes of members who had long traveled internationally to participate in temple ordinances.
Before the announcement, members in Vanuatu generally traveled to the Suva Fiji Temple, requiring expensive international travel and significant time away from home. The Port Vila Temple will make temple worship far more accessible for members throughout the archipelago.
Current Status
The Port Vila Vanuatu Temple is under construction and is in the final stages of the building process. Recent updates show that exterior cladding has been installed, art-glass windows are being placed, interior finish work is progressing, and the temple president and matron have already been called—strong indicators that the project is moving toward completion. Open house and dedication dates have not yet been announced.
The temple is being constructed on the site of the former Blacksands meetinghouse, near Port Vila International Airport. The 1.62-acre (0.7-hectare) temple complex will include:
- A single-story temple of approximately 10,000 square feet (929 square meters)
- A single attached end spire
- An arrival center
- Patron housing
- A distribution center
Groundbreaking services were originally scheduled for March 2023 but were postponed after Cyclones Judy and Kevin struck Vanuatu. The ceremony was successfully held on April 8, 2023, with Elder K. Brett Nattress, President of the Pacific Area, presiding. The President of Vanuatu and other government leaders attended the historic event.
What to Watch for Next
The next major milestone will be the announcement of the public open house and temple dedication. Construction has advanced rapidly, with exterior lighting, landscaping, interior finishes, and ancillary buildings nearing completion. The recent calling of the temple president and matron suggests the temple is approaching its final stages before opening to the public.
Nearest Operating Temple
Until the Port Vila Vanuatu Temple is dedicated, members continue to travel to the Suva Fiji Temple for temple worship. Once completed, the Port Vila Temple will eliminate the need for international travel for thousands of Latter-day Saints living throughout Vanuatu, making sacred temple ordinances far more accessible.
Final Thoughts
The Port Vila Vanuatu Temple represents a remarkable milestone in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Pacific. As the nation's first temple, it fulfills decades of prayers and sacrifice by faithful members who previously traveled across international borders to worship in the house of the Lord. With construction now in its final stages, the temple stands as a symbol of faith, hope, and the continued growth of the Church throughout the islands of Vanuatu.
