Piura Peru Temple: What We Know So Far

Announcement

The Piura Peru Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2023 General Conference on October 1, 2023. It will become the eighth temple announced for Peru and the first temple in the Piura Region. At the time of the announcement, Peru was home to approximately 630,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in more than 775 congregations, reflecting the Church's continued growth throughout the country.

Located in northwestern Peru near the Ecuadorian border, Piura serves a large population of Latter-day Saints who have traditionally traveled significant distances to attend temples in Trujillo, Lima, or other regions. The new temple will make sacred temple ordinances much more accessible for members throughout northern Peru.

Current Status

The Piura Peru Temple is currently in the planning and approval phase.

On October 27, 2025, the Church announced the temple site and released the official exterior rendering. The temple will be constructed on a 2.6-acre (1.1-hectare) property located at the northwest corner of Avenida Tallanes and Avenida Prolongación in Piura. Plans call for a single-story temple of approximately 18,850 square feet (1,751 square meters) featuring a single attached central tower and an accompanying ancillary building.

As of now, no groundbreaking date has been announced.

What to Watch for Next

The next major milestone will be the announcement of the temple's groundbreaking ceremony. After construction begins, members will be able to follow progress through structural construction, exterior completion, interior finishing, landscaping, and eventually the announcement of public open house and temple dedication dates.

Nearest Operating Temple

Until the Piura Peru Temple is completed, members in northwestern Peru generally worship at the Trujillo Peru Temple, the nearest operating temple. Once the Piura Temple is dedicated, it will significantly reduce travel for members throughout the Piura Region, including surrounding stakes and districts in northern Peru.

Final Thoughts

The Piura Peru Temple represents another important milestone in the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Peru. As the first temple in northwestern Peru, it will bring sacred temple blessings much closer to thousands of faithful members who have long traveled great distances to worship in the house of the Lord. Although still awaiting groundbreaking, the announcement of both the temple site and exterior rendering marks exciting progress toward the day this beautiful temple will bless generations of Latter-day Saints throughout the Piura Region.
