The Phoenix Arizona Temple is the fifth temple built in Arizona and the 144th dedicated temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Located in north Phoenix near the communities of Deer Valley and Anthem, the temple serves members throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area and northern Arizona. Its warm earth-tone exterior and elegant single-spire design make it one of the most distinctive temples in the Southwest.
A Brief History
President Thomas S. Monson announced the Phoenix Arizona Temple on May 24, 2008, less than a month after announcing the Gilbert Arizona Temple and The Gila Valley Arizona Temple. The rapid succession of temple announcements reflected the tremendous growth of the Church throughout Arizona and the increasing demand on the historic Mesa Arizona Temple.
After the announcement, the Church worked closely with neighborhood residents and city officials to refine the temple's design. The original proposal required rezoning because of its height, but after community feedback, the plans were completely redesigned. The temple became a single-story structure with a full basement, its exterior color was changed from white to warm earth tones, and the design was modified to comply with existing residential zoning. This collaborative approach helped the project move forward while addressing local concerns.
Groundbreaking services were held on June 4, 2011, with Elder Ronald A. Rasband presiding. On May 15, 2013, the angel Moroni statue was placed atop the completed spire before members and construction workers gathered to witness the milestone. Following a 22-day public open house from October 10 through November 1, 2014, President Thomas S. Monson dedicated the temple on November 16, 2014, making it the 144th dedicated temple of the Church.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
One of the Phoenix Arizona Temple's most distinctive features is its architectural story. Rather than pursuing the original taller design, the Church redesigned the temple to harmonize with the surrounding neighborhood while preserving its beauty and sacred purpose. The resulting building features elegant precast integral-colored concrete panels, giving it a warm desert appearance that blends naturally with the Arizona landscape.
The temple contains approximately 64,870 square feet and features two progressive instruction rooms, four sealing rooms, and a baptistry. A graceful 90-foot central spire topped with the angel Moroni serves as the temple's architectural focal point.
The landscaping also reflects the Sonoran Desert, incorporating native plants, flowering trees, and drought-tolerant vegetation. Together with the temple's warm exterior colors, the grounds create a peaceful oasis that complements the surrounding environment.
Visiting the Temple
The Phoenix Arizona Temple is located at 5220 West Pinnacle Peak Road in Phoenix, Arizona. The temple does not have a visitors' center, arrival center, patron housing, or an on-site distribution center. Temple clothing rental is not available, though baptistry clothing is provided. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the beautifully landscaped grounds and peaceful atmosphere surrounding the temple.
