Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple: History, Unique Features, and Visitor Guide

The Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple is one of the most architecturally stunning temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Located in the Logan Square neighborhood of downtown Philadelphia, it was the first temple built in Pennsylvania and the 152nd dedicated temple of the Church. With its classical design, granite exterior, and prominent location along Vine Street, the temple beautifully complements the city's rich historical architecture.

A Brief History

President Thomas S. Monson announced the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple during the October 2008 General Conference on October 4, 2008. The announcement fulfilled a long-held hope for members throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, many of whom had previously traveled several hours to attend temples in Washington, D.C., New York, or other neighboring states.

Groundbreaking services were held on September 17, 2011, with President Henry B. Eyring presiding. Construction took nearly five years as craftsmen carefully completed the temple's intricate architectural details and surrounding landscape. Following a 30-day public open house from August 10 through September 9, 2016, President Henry B. Eyring dedicated the temple on September 18, 2016, making it the 152nd dedicated temple of the Church.

What Makes This Temple Unique?

One of the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple's most distinctive features is its classical American architecture, inspired by the historic buildings surrounding Benjamin Franklin Parkway and nearby landmarks such as the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. The temple's elegant exterior is finished in granite and features two attached end spires, a design found on only a handful of temples throughout the world.

Inside, the temple contains approximately 61,466 square feet and includes two instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and a baptistry. The interior design reflects Philadelphia's colonial heritage with handcrafted woodwork, crystal chandeliers, detailed moldings, and artwork inspired by local history and the surrounding countryside.

Another unique aspect is the temple's urban setting. Standing just blocks from landmarks such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Love Park, and City Hall, the temple provides a peaceful place of worship in the center of one of America's most historic cities. It currently serves members from 11 stakes across eastern Pennsylvania, central and southern New Jersey, and Delaware.

Visiting the Temple

The Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple is located at 1739 Vine Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The temple includes an arrival center and an on-site distribution center, where temple clothing and garments are available for purchase. Temple clothing rental is also available. While there is no visitors' center, guests are welcome to enjoy the beautifully landscaped grounds and admire the temple's impressive architecture from the surrounding sidewalks.
