Payson Utah Temple: History, Unique Features, and Visitor Guide

The Payson Utah Temple is one of the most beautiful temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Located in Payson, Utah, at the southern end of Utah Valley, it was the fifteenth temple built in Utah, the third temple built in Utah County, and the 146th dedicated temple of the Church. With its towering spire, elegant architecture, and scenic mountain backdrop, the temple has become a cherished landmark for members throughout central Utah.

A Brief History

President Thomas S. Monson announced the Payson Utah Temple on January 25, 2010, explaining that the new temple would serve the growing membership of southern Utah County and help relieve the heavy demand on the Provo Utah Temple. At the time of the announcement, the new temple brought the total number of operating and announced temples in Utah to fifteen.

Groundbreaking services were held on October 8, 2011, with Elder Dallin H. Oaks presiding. Despite chilly temperatures and light rain, several thousand people attended the ceremony. Elder Oaks remarked that the temple's location adjacent to Interstate 15 would make it "a dominant and visible influence on the millions who pass by here by day and by night."

Following a 29-day public open house from April 24 through May 23, 2015, more than 475,000 visitors toured the temple. President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency, dedicated the temple on June 7, 2015, making it the 146th dedicated temple of the Church.

What Makes This Temple Unique?

One of the Payson Utah Temple's most striking features is its impressive 208-foot central spire, making it one of the tallest temple spires in Utah. Positioned on gently sloping ground near Interstate 15, the temple is visible for miles and serves as a landmark for travelers entering southern Utah County.

The temple contains approximately 96,630 square feet and includes three instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and a baptistry. Its exterior is finished with elegant cream-colored precast concrete panels, giving the temple a bright and timeless appearance against the surrounding Wasatch Mountains.

Another memorable moment in the temple's history occurred on October 10, 2013, when hundreds of community members gathered to watch the angel Moroni statue be placed atop the completed spire. The event became a milestone for the rapidly progressing construction and generated excitement throughout the temple district.
