Palmyra New York Temple: History, Unique Features, and Visitor Guide

The Palmyra New York Temple is one of the most historically significant temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Located on the Smith Family Farm beside the Sacred Grove, where Joseph Smith testified that he saw God the Father and Jesus Christ in the First Vision, the temple occupies one of the most sacred locations in Church history. It was the first temple built in New York, the 100th temple announced, and the 77th dedicated temple of the Church.

A Brief History

President Gordon B. Hinckley announced the Palmyra New York Temple on February 21, 1999, marking the 100th temple announcement in Church history. Because of Palmyra's unique role in the Restoration, the announcement was especially meaningful to members around the world.

Groundbreaking and site dedication took place on May 25, 1999, with President Gordon B. Hinckley presiding. Construction moved quickly, and after a seven-day public open house from March 25 through April 1, 2000, President Hinckley dedicated the temple on April 6, 2000. The dedication occurred exactly 170 years after the Church was formally organized on April 6, 1830, in nearby Fayette, New York, making the occasion especially symbolic.

What Makes This Temple Unique?

The Palmyra New York Temple stands in one of the most sacred areas of Church history. It sits on the eastern edge of the original 100-acre Smith Family Farm, just steps from the Sacred Grove, where the First Vision took place, and only a short distance from the Hill Cumorah, where Joseph Smith received the gold plates from the angel Moroni. Few temples are surrounded by so many important Restoration sites.

Another remarkable feature is the temple's artwork. Utah artist Tom Holdman created beautiful stained-glass windows inspired by the Sacred Grove. One hallway contains a stunning stained-glass mural depicting the First Vision. In the waiting area, President Gordon B. Hinckley requested that transparent tree-themed windows be installed so patrons could enjoy an unobstructed view of the Sacred Grove itself. An administrative office was even relocated during construction to preserve this view.

The temple features a graceful single attached spire topped with the angel Moroni and is finished with elegant Bethel White granite. Inside, the temple contains approximately 10,900 square feet, including two progressive instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry. Though relatively small, its location gives it extraordinary spiritual significance.

Visiting the Temple

The Palmyra New York Temple is located at 2720 Temple Road in Palmyra, New York. While the temple itself does not have a public visitors' center, it is surrounded by several nearby Church history sites that welcome visitors, including the Sacred Grove, Smith Family Farm, Hill Cumorah, and the Grandin Building, where the first copies of the Book of Mormon were printed. Together, these sites make Palmyra one of the most meaningful destinations for Latter-day Saints.
