Announcement
The Osaka Japan Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2023 General Conference on October 1, 2023. It will become the fifth temple in Japan, joining the Tokyo Japan Temple, Fukuoka Japan Temple, Sapporo Japan Temple, and Okinawa Japan Temple. At the time of the announcement, Japan was home to more than 130,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints organized into approximately 230 congregations.
The temple will serve members throughout the Kansai region, including Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Nara, and surrounding prefectures, making temple worship much more accessible for thousands of Latter-day Saints living in western Japan.
Current Status
The Osaka Japan Temple is currently under development, with significant site preparation already underway.
On March 4, 2024, the Church announced the temple site at 3-50-1 Sugi, Hirakata City, Osaka Prefecture, Japan. The temple will be constructed on a 10-acre (4-hectare) property and will feature approximately 34,320 square feet (3,188 square meters) of floor space. The design includes a single attached central tower, two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry.
The official exterior rendering was released on September 8, 2025. As of July 2026, demolition of the former buildings on the property has been completed, earthmoving operations are in progress, and crews are preparing the site for the next phase of construction. The temple complex will also include patron housing and an ancillary building. No groundbreaking date has yet been announced.
What to Watch for Next
The next major milestone will be the announcement of the temple's groundbreaking ceremony. Following groundbreaking, construction will move into foundation work, structural framing, exterior completion, interior finishing, landscaping, and finally the announcement of public open house and temple dedication dates.
Nearest Operating Temple
Until the Osaka Japan Temple is completed, members in the Kansai region generally attend the Okinawa Japan Temple, Fukuoka Japan Temple, or Tokyo Japan Temple, depending on where they live. Once dedicated, the Osaka Temple will significantly reduce travel for members throughout western Japan and become an important spiritual center for one of the nation's largest metropolitan regions.
Final Thoughts
The Osaka Japan Temple represents another important milestone in the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Japan. As the country's fifth temple, it will bring sacred temple ordinances closer to thousands of faithful members throughout the Kansai region. With site preparation progressing and construction moving forward, the temple is steadily advancing toward the day it will become a lasting symbol of faith and hope in western Japan.
