Nouméa New Caledonia Temple: What We Know So Far

Announcement

The Nouméa New Caledonia Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2025 General Conference on April 6, 2025. It will become the first temple in New Caledonia, marking a historic milestone for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the French overseas territory. New Caledonia is home to more than 2,500 Church members organized into one stake, with Church history on the islands dating back to the 1950s when members from Tahiti first settled there.

The announcement was especially meaningful for members throughout the islands, who have long traveled internationally to participate in temple ordinances. A temple in Nouméa will make sacred temple worship far more accessible for Latter-day Saints living across New Caledonia.

Current Status

The Nouméa New Caledonia Temple is currently in the planning and approval phase. At this time, no official temple site has been announced, no exterior rendering has been released, and no groundbreaking date has been scheduled. Church leaders continue working through the early planning process before additional details are made public.

What to Watch for Next

The next major milestone will be the announcement of the temple site within the Nouméa metropolitan area. After that, the Church is expected to release the official exterior rendering, followed by the announcement of a groundbreaking ceremony. Once construction is complete, dates for the public open house and temple dedication will be announced.

Nearest Operating Temple

Until the Nouméa New Caledonia Temple is completed, members in New Caledonia generally travel to the Suva Fiji Temple, the nearest operating temple serving much of the southwestern Pacific. Once dedicated, the Nouméa Temple will eliminate the need for international travel for thousands of members and make temple worship much more accessible throughout the island territory.

Final Thoughts

The Nouméa New Caledonia Temple represents a historic milestone for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the South Pacific. As the first temple in New Caledonia, it reflects the steady growth and enduring faith of the Church's members across the islands. Although the project is still in its earliest planning stages, the announcement brings the promise of sacred temple blessings much closer to home for generations of faithful Latter-day Saints.
