The Norfolk Virginia Temple is one of the newest temples announced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and will become the fourth temple in Virginia. Located in Suffolk, just west of Norfolk, the temple will serve members throughout the Hampton Roads region and southeastern Virginia. Once completed, it will bring temple blessings closer to thousands of Latter-day Saints who currently travel to the Richmond Virginia Temple or other nearby temples.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Norfolk Virginia Temple during the April 2025 General Conference on April 6, 2025. It was one of 15 new temples announced during the conference and reflected the continued growth of the Church throughout Virginia, where more than 100,000 Latter-day Saints worship in approximately 210 congregations.
On February 9, 2026, the First Presidency announced the temple site and released the official exterior rendering. The temple will be constructed on a 23-acre property at the northwest corner of Harbour View Boulevard and Bridge Road in Suffolk, Virginia. Plans call for a beautiful one-story temple of approximately 18,850 square feet with an adjacent distribution center.
As of today, the Norfolk Virginia Temple remains in the planning and approval phase. Construction has not yet begun, and the Church has not announced a groundbreaking date.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
One of the Norfolk Virginia Temple's most distinctive features is its location in Suffolk, allowing it to serve members throughout the greater Hampton Roads area, including Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Newport News, and surrounding communities. The temple will significantly reduce travel for members living in southeastern Virginia and portions of northeastern North Carolina.
The official rendering shows a beautiful single-story temple with a single attached end tower, reflecting the elegant architectural style seen in many recently announced temples. Though modest in size, the temple has been carefully designed to meet the needs of its growing temple district while complementing the surrounding community.
Another notable feature is the planned on-site distribution center, which will provide convenient access to temple clothing and materials for members throughout the region.
Visiting the Temple
The Norfolk Virginia Temple is not yet under construction. Once completed, it will be located near the intersection of Harbour View Boulevard and Bridge Road in Suffolk, Virginia. Before the temple is dedicated, the Church will host a public open house, allowing visitors of all faiths to tour the completed building and learn more about the purpose of temples. Open house dates will be announced after construction nears completion.
