Montreal Quebec Temple: History, Architecture, and Travel Guide

Where It's Located

The Montreal Quebec Temple is located at 1450 Boulevard Marie-Victorin, Longueuil, Quebec J4G 1A4, Canada, just across the St. Lawrence River from downtown Montreal. Situated in the city of Longueuil, the temple occupies a beautifully landscaped 2.4-acre site. The grounds include a distribution center, but there is no visitors' center, arrival center, or patron housing.

Getting There

The nearest major airport is Montréal–Trudeau International Airport (YUL), located about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of the temple. Travelers from the United States can reach Montreal through numerous nonstop flights from cities such as New York, Boston, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, and Los Angeles. From the airport, the temple is typically a 30- to 40-minute drive, depending on traffic.

A Bit of History

The Montreal Quebec Temple was announced by the First Presidency on August 6, 1998, during President Gordon B. Hinckley's historic worldwide temple expansion. It became the 86th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the sixth temple in Canada, as well as the first temple in the province of Quebec. Before its construction, many members in Quebec traveled six hours to the Toronto Ontario Temple, while earlier generations often journeyed to the Cardston Alberta Temple or even the Bern Switzerland Temple.

Groundbreaking services were held on April 9, 1999, with Elder Gary J. Coleman presiding. Following a public open house from May 20–27, 2000, President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the temple on June 4, 2000, the same day he dedicated the San José Costa Rica Temple. The temple underwent a major renovation beginning in 2014, during which its structural framing was reinforced, mold remediation was completed, and the interior received significant upgrades. President Henry B. Eyring rededicated the temple on November 22, 2015.

Design and Architecture

The Montreal Quebec Temple contains approximately 11,550 square feet of floor space. Its exterior is clad in granite quarried in Quebec and features a single attached spire topped with an angel Moroni statue. Decorative windows incorporate gold and blue stained glass inspired by historic Montreal ironwork, while carved maple leaf motifs celebrate Canada's national symbol.

Inside, the temple includes two progressive instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The interior features cream-colored finishes accented with gold leaf, locally crafted maple woodwork, African mahogany, and beautiful landscape murals depicting the St. Lawrence River and the natural beauty surrounding Montreal. The peaceful grounds and thoughtful design make the temple a cherished place of worship for members throughout Quebec and eastern Canada.

Final Thoughts

The Montreal Quebec Temple represents a historic milestone for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in eastern Canada. As Quebec's first temple, it dramatically reduced travel for thousands of faithful members while strengthening the Church throughout the region. Following its extensive renovation and rededication, the temple continues to serve members from Quebec, eastern Ontario, and neighboring areas while standing as a beautiful symbol of faith along the banks of the St. Lawrence River.
