The Montpelier Idaho Temple is the eighth dedicated temple in Idaho and serves members throughout southeastern Idaho, western Wyoming, and the Bear Lake region. Located in the small community of Montpelier, the temple is a beautiful reminder that temples are being built closer to members in communities of every size. Dedicated in 2026, it became the 231st dedicated temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Montpelier Idaho Temple during the April 2022 General Conference on April 3, 2022. The announcement was especially meaningful for members in southeastern Idaho, many of whom had previously traveled to the Logan Utah, Star Valley Wyoming, Pocatello Idaho, or Idaho Falls Idaho Temples.
The Church announced the temple site on May 20, 2022, selecting a 2.6-acre parcel on Washington Street between North 5th and North 6th Streets, just east of the historic Montpelier Tabernacle. An official rendering followed on April 24, 2023, and groundbreaking services were held on June 17, 2023, with Elder Ryan K. Olsen, General Authority Seventy, presiding.
Following a 16-day public open house from September 10–26, 2026, the temple was dedicated on October 18, 2026, becoming the 231st dedicated temple of the Church.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
One of the Montpelier Idaho Temple's most distinctive features is its location in one of Idaho's oldest Latter-day Saint communities. Nestled near Bear Lake and surrounded by mountain valleys, the temple serves faithful members in a rural area with deep pioneer roots. Its location significantly reduces travel time for members throughout southeastern Idaho and nearby western Wyoming.
The temple features a graceful single attached central tower and contains approximately 27,000 square feet. Inside are two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry. Although modest in size, the temple provides all of the sacred ordinances needed to serve its growing temple district.
Another unique aspect is its proximity to the historic Montpelier Tabernacle, which was carefully renovated in 2015. Together, the tabernacle and temple create a meaningful religious landmark in the heart of the community, blending the Church's pioneer heritage with its continuing growth.
Visiting the Temple
The Montpelier Idaho Temple is located at 534 Washington Street in Montpelier, Idaho. The temple does not have a visitors' center, arrival center, or temple housing. It does include an on-site distribution center, and visitors are welcome to enjoy the beautifully landscaped grounds surrounding the temple.
