The Modesto California Temple is the tenth temple built in California and serves members throughout California's Central Valley. Located adjacent to an existing meetinghouse on Dale Road in Modesto, the temple reflects the Church's continued growth in one of the nation's largest concentrations of Latter-day Saints. With elegant architecture inspired by the surrounding agricultural landscape, it became the 230th dedicated temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2026.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Modesto California Temple during the April 2022 General Conference on April 3, 2022. At the time of the announcement, California was home to more than 755,000 members of the Church, making it one of the largest Church populations outside of Utah. The new temple was announced to better serve members throughout the northern San Joaquin Valley.
The Church announced the temple site on October 10, 2022, selecting a 17.63-acre property adjacent to an existing meetinghouse at 4300 Dale Road. Groundbreaking services were held on October 7, 2023, with Elder Gary B. Sabin presiding. Following a 15-day public open house from October 16–31, 2026, Elder Quentin L. Cook dedicated the temple on November 22, 2026, making it the 230th dedicated temple of the Church.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
One of the Modesto California Temple's most distinctive features is its design, which celebrates the rich agricultural heritage of California's Central Valley. Decorative motifs throughout the temple feature almond blossoms, honoring the region's famous almond orchards that blanket the valley each spring. The custom art glass also incorporates floral patterns inspired by the area's natural beauty.
The temple features a graceful single attached central tower and contains approximately 30,000 square feet. Inside are two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry. The elegant exterior, landscaped grounds, and thoughtful architectural details create a peaceful setting for worship while complementing the surrounding community.
Another unique feature is the temple's location in California's productive farming region. Situated in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley, it significantly reduces travel times for members who previously attended the Fresno, Sacramento, Oakland, or other nearby temples.
Visiting the Temple
The Modesto California Temple is located adjacent to 4300 Dale Road in Modesto, California. The temple does not include a visitors' center, arrival center, or patron housing. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the beautifully landscaped grounds, and before its dedication the temple hosted a public open house that welcomed guests from all faiths to tour the building.
