Missoula Montana Temple: History, Announcement, and Visitor Guide

The Missoula Montana Temple is the third temple being built in Montana and will serve members throughout western Montana and surrounding communities. Located in the beautiful Bitterroot Valley on the southern edge of Missoula, the temple represents another milestone in bringing temple blessings closer to Latter-day Saints across the Northern Rocky Mountains. It is currently under construction following its groundbreaking in 2026.

A Brief History

President Russell M. Nelson announced the Missoula Montana Temple during the April 2022 General Conference on April 3, 2022. At the time of the announcement, Montana was home to more than 50,000 Latter-day Saints in over 125 congregations. The new temple was announced to help accommodate the continued growth of the Church throughout western Montana and reduce travel times for members who had previously attended the Billings or Helena temples.

On November 4, 2024, the Church announced the temple site at the intersection of Old Bitterroot Road and Lower Miller Creek Road in southern Missoula. An official exterior rendering followed on December 23, 2024, giving members their first look at the beautiful single-story temple with its elegant central tower.

Groundbreaking services were held on June 6, 2026, with Elder José A. Teixeira of the United States Central Area Presidency presiding. Construction is now underway, with open house and dedication dates to be announced after the project is completed.

What Makes This Temple Unique?

One of the Missoula Montana Temple's most distinctive features is its location in the scenic Bitterroot Valley, surrounded by the mountains of western Montana. The temple site offers beautiful views of the nearby peaks and will provide a peaceful setting for worship and reflection.

The temple will feature a single attached central tower and contain approximately 19,000 square feet of floor space. While modest in size, it has been carefully designed to meet the needs of members throughout western Montana and neighboring communities. The temple will be constructed on a 5.08-acre property with an accompanying ancillary building and landscaped grounds.

When completed, the Missoula Montana Temple will complement the Billings Montana Temple and Helena Montana Temple, making temple worship significantly more accessible for members living across the western portion of the state.

Visiting the Temple

The Missoula Montana Temple is currently under construction and is located at the corner of Old Bitterroot Road and Lower Miller Creek Road in Missoula, Montana. Because construction is ongoing, the public cannot yet visit the temple. Before its dedication, the Church will host a public open house, allowing visitors of all faiths to tour the completed building and learn more about the purpose of temples. Open house dates will be announced once construction nears completion.
