Announcement
The Milan Italy Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2024 General Conference on October 6, 2024. It will become the second temple in Italy, joining the Rome Italy Temple, which was dedicated in 2019. The announcement reflects the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Italy, where more than 28,000 members worship in nearly 100 congregations. Missionary work in Italy dates back to 1850, when Elder Lorenzo Snow and his companions first preached the restored gospel in the country.
Current Status
The Milan Italy Temple is currently in the planning and approval phase. At this time, no official temple site has been announced, no exterior rendering has been released, and no groundbreaking date has been scheduled. Church leaders continue working through the planning process before additional details are made public.
What to Watch for Next
The next major milestone will be the announcement of the temple site within the Milan metropolitan area. After that, the Church is expected to release the official exterior rendering, followed by the announcement of a groundbreaking ceremony. Once construction is complete, dates for the public open house and temple dedication will be announced.
Nearest Operating Temple
Until the Milan Italy Temple is completed, members in northern Italy continue to travel to the Rome Italy Temple, the country's only operating temple. The addition of a temple in Milan will greatly reduce travel for Latter-day Saints living in northern Italy and nearby regions, making temple worship more accessible for thousands of members.
Final Thoughts
The Milan Italy Temple represents another important milestone in the growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Italy. As the nation's second temple, it will bring sacred temple ordinances closer to members throughout northern Italy while building on the legacy established by the Rome Italy Temple. Although the project remains in its earliest planning stages, the announcement reflects the continued expansion of the Church and the increasing need for temples across Europe.
