Mexico City Benemérito Mexico Temple: What We Know So Far

Announcement

The Mexico City Benemérito Mexico Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2022 General Conference on April 3, 2022. It will become the 19th temple in Mexico and the second temple in Mexico City, joining the historic Mexico City Mexico Temple. The announcement reflects the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mexico, which is home to approximately 1.5 million members in more than 1,800 congregations.

The temple will be built on the historic Benemérito de las Américas campus, a site that holds deep significance for many Mexican Latter-day Saints. Founded in 1964 as a Church-operated secondary school, the campus was converted into the Mexico Missionary Training Center (MTC) in 2013 and has since trained thousands of Spanish-speaking missionaries.

Current Status

The Mexico City Benemérito Mexico Temple is currently in the planning and approval phase.

The Church announced the temple site on October 31, 2022, selecting a former recreational area adjacent to the Mexico City Missionary Training Center at Tenayuca-Chalmita 828, Colonia Zona Escolar, Gustavo A. Madero, Mexico City. Plans call for a two-story temple of approximately 29,000 square feet (2,694 square meters).

On December 16, 2024, the Church released the official exterior rendering of the temple, giving members their first look at the future house of the Lord. As of now, no groundbreaking date has been announced.

What to Watch for Next

The next major milestone will be the announcement of the temple's groundbreaking ceremony. Once construction begins, members can follow the project's progress through structural work, exterior completion, interior finishing, landscaping, and eventually the announcement of public open house and temple dedication dates.

Nearest Operating Temple

Until the Mexico City Benemérito Mexico Temple is completed, members continue to worship at the nearby Mexico City Mexico Temple, located about 10 miles (16 kilometers) away. Once dedicated, the new temple will help serve the millions of residents living throughout one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world while easing demand on the existing temple.

Final Thoughts

The Mexico City Benemérito Mexico Temple represents another important milestone in the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mexico. Beyond providing greater access to temple ordinances, the temple will stand on one of the most meaningful Church properties in Latin America, where generations of students and missionaries have prepared to serve the Lord. Although still awaiting groundbreaking, the release of the temple rendering marks another exciting step toward the day this sacred house of the Lord will bless countless members throughout Mexico City and beyond.
