Announcement
The Maputo Mozambique Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2024 General Conference on October 6, 2024. It will become the second temple in Mozambique, following the previously announced Beira Mozambique Temple. The announcement highlights the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in southeastern Africa. Mozambique is home to nearly 25,000 members in about 70 congregations, with missionary work in the country officially beginning in 1999. Maputo, the nation's capital, has a population of more than 1 million people.
Current Status
The Maputo Mozambique Temple is currently in the planning and approval phase. At this time, no official temple site has been announced, no exterior rendering has been released, and no groundbreaking date has been scheduled. Church leaders continue working through the planning process before additional details are made public.
What to Watch for Next
The next major milestone will be the announcement of the temple site within Maputo. After that, the Church is expected to release an official exterior rendering, followed by the announcement of a groundbreaking ceremony. Once construction is complete, the Church will announce dates for the public open house and temple dedication.
Nearest Operating Temple
Until the Maputo Mozambique Temple is completed, members in southern Mozambique generally travel to the Johannesburg South Africa Temple. Once the temple is dedicated, it will provide much closer access to temple ordinances for thousands of Latter-day Saints living in and around Mozambique's capital. The future Beira Mozambique Temple, currently moving forward separately, will also help serve members in the country.
Final Thoughts
The Maputo Mozambique Temple marks another important milestone in the expansion of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across Africa. As Mozambique's second announced temple, it will bring sacred temple blessings closer to faithful members in the nation's capital while supporting the Church's continued growth throughout the country. Although still in the earliest stages of planning, the announcement reflects the increasing need for temples in a region where membership continues to grow steadily.
