Announcement
The Managua Nicaragua Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2018 General Conference on April 1, 2018. It will become the first temple in Nicaragua and the seventh temple in Central America. Before the announcement, Nicaragua was the only country in Central America (excluding Belize) without a temple, requiring members to travel to the Tegucigalpa Honduras Temple or the San José Costa Rica Temple to participate in temple ordinances.
President Nelson's announcement fulfilled a promise he had made to Nicaraguan members during a visit in 2012, when he told them that as they became spiritually prepared, the Lord would provide a temple for their country. Today, Nicaragua is home to more than 106,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 109 congregations.
Current Status
The Managua Nicaragua Temple is in the final stages of construction and is preparing to welcome the public.
The Church announced the temple site on October 17, 2022, selecting an 8.9-acre property along the Highway to Masaya at the southern end of Managua. The official exterior rendering was released the same day, and groundbreaking services were held on November 26, 2022, with Elder Taylor G. Godoy, First Counselor in the Central America Area Presidency, presiding.
The temple is a single-story building of approximately 25,000 square feet featuring a single attached central spire. Inside are two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry.
The Church has announced that the public open house will run from September 10 through September 26, 2026 (excluding Sundays), following media and invited guest tours. The temple is scheduled to be dedicated on October 18, 2026, by Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
What to Watch for Next
With construction essentially complete, the next major milestones are the public open house and the dedicatory services. After the dedication, the Managua Nicaragua Temple will officially begin serving members throughout Nicaragua, dramatically reducing the need for international travel to participate in temple worship.
Nearest Operating Temple
Until the Managua Nicaragua Temple is dedicated, members in Nicaragua continue to attend the Tegucigalpa Honduras Temple and the San José Costa Rica Temple. Once the Managua Temple opens, thousands of Latter-day Saints across the country will be able to worship in their own nation for the first time.
Final Thoughts
The Managua Nicaragua Temple represents a historic milestone for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Nicaragua. As the nation's first temple, it fulfills years of faithful anticipation and a promise made by President Russell M. Nelson long before the temple was announced. With its public open house and dedication now scheduled, the temple is poised to become a lasting symbol of faith and a tremendous blessing for generations of Latter-day Saints throughout Nicaragua.
