Luanda Angola Temple: What We Know So Far

Announcement

The Luanda Angola Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2023 General Conference on October 1, 2023. It will become the first temple in Angola and the first in the nation's history. The announcement marked an important milestone for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in this Portuguese-speaking country in southwestern Africa. At the time of the announcement, Angola was home to nearly 5,000 members in approximately 20 congregations. Since then, the Church has continued to grow, with more than 7,300 members, 2 stakes, and 29 congregations now established across the country.

Current Status

The Luanda Angola Temple is currently in the planning and approval phase. At this time, no official temple site has been announced, no exterior rendering has been released, and no groundbreaking date has been scheduled. Church leaders continue working through the early planning process before additional information is made public.

What to Watch for Next

The next major milestone will be the announcement of the temple site within Luanda. After that, the Church is expected to release the official exterior rendering, followed by the announcement of a groundbreaking ceremony. Once construction is complete, dates will be announced for the public open house and temple dedication.

Nearest Operating Temple

Until the Luanda Angola Temple is completed, most members in Angola travel to the Kinshasa Democratic Republic of the Congo Temple for temple worship. The new temple will dramatically reduce travel time and make temple ordinances much more accessible for Latter-day Saints throughout Angola.

Final Thoughts

The Luanda Angola Temple represents a historic milestone in the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Africa. As Angola's first temple, it will bring sacred temple blessings much closer to thousands of faithful members who have long traveled across international borders to worship in the temple. Although the project is still in its earliest planning stages, its announcement reflects the remarkable growth of the Church in Angola and the continued expansion of temple building throughout Africa.
