The Los Angeles California Temple is one of the most iconic temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Located in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, it was the first temple built in California and the 10th dedicated temple of the Church. Known for its towering white spire, beautiful grounds, and historic significance, the temple has served members throughout Southern California since 1956.
A Brief History
President Heber J. Grant announced the Los Angeles California Temple on March 6, 1937. Shortly afterward, the Church purchased land that had previously been owned by the Harold Lloyd Motion Picture Company. Although construction was originally expected to begin soon, the Great Depression and World War II delayed the project for many years.
Groundbreaking services were finally held on September 22, 1951, with President David O. McKay presiding. Following an extraordinary 61-day public open house that attracted more than 682,000 visitors, President McKay dedicated the temple on March 11–14, 1956, making it the 10th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The temple has undergone several renovations over the years, including major remodeling in 1981, a seismic upgrade in 2005–2006, and additional interior improvements that preserved many of its historic features while enhancing the worship experience.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
The Los Angeles California Temple is famous for its impressive 257-foot central spire, making it one of the tallest temples in the Church. At the time of its dedication, it was the largest temple ever built, a distinction it held until later additions to the Salt Lake Temple.
Another unique feature is its four progressive ordinance rooms, each decorated with beautiful hand-painted murals. Originally, the endowment was presented entirely through live acting, making it the last temple specifically designed for live presentations. Today, it remains one of only a handful of temples where patrons progress through multiple ordinance rooms before entering the Celestial Room.
The temple also includes a large priesthood assembly room capable of seating approximately 2,000 people, a feature that was added during the design process and remains one of the temple's most distinctive architectural elements. Its beautifully landscaped 13-acre grounds include palm trees, fountains, reflecting pools, family sculptures, and thousands of colorful Christmas lights displayed each holiday season.
Visiting the Temple
The Los Angeles California Temple is located at 10777 Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. Visitors are welcome to explore the beautifully maintained grounds and enjoy the on-site Visitors' Center, which features exhibits about Jesus Christ, family history, and the purpose of temples. The temple complex also includes a Family History Center, patron housing, and an on-site distribution center, making it one of the Church's most complete temple campuses.
