Announcement
The Lethbridge Alberta Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2023 General Conference on April 2, 2023. It will become Canada's tenth temple and the fourth temple in Alberta, joining the Cardston, Edmonton, and Calgary temples. Lethbridge, located in southern Alberta near the U.S. border, is home to approximately 100,000 residents and has long been home to a large Latter-day Saint population. At the time of the announcement, Canada had nearly 200,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in approximately 500 congregations.
Current Status
The Lethbridge Alberta Temple is currently under construction. The temple site was announced on September 5, 2023, and is located on a 9-acre property at the corner of Whoop Up Drive West and Mauretania Road West in Lethbridge. The official exterior rendering was released on April 29, 2024, and groundbreaking services were held on April 26, 2025, with Elder Randall K. Bennett, President of the North America Central Area, presiding.
Plans call for a multistory temple containing approximately 45,000 square feet, making it one of Canada's larger temples. The temple will feature a single attached end spire and will include four instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The complex will also include a distribution center.
Construction has progressed rapidly. As of July 2026, crews are installing the temple's stone cladding, window frames have been installed throughout the structure, and the tower has been fully sheathed in preparation for the installation of the temple's steeple and exterior finishes.
What to Watch for Next
With the building's exterior taking shape, the next major milestones include completion of the stone exterior, installation of the spire, interior construction and finishing, landscaping, and eventually the announcement of the public open house and temple dedication dates.
Nearest Operating Temple
Until the Lethbridge Alberta Temple is dedicated, members in southern Alberta primarily attend the Cardston Alberta Temple, which has faithfully served the region since 1923. Some members also attend the Calgary Alberta Temple, depending on where they live. Once completed, the Lethbridge Temple will significantly reduce travel for thousands of Latter-day Saints throughout southern Alberta.
Final Thoughts
The Lethbridge Alberta Temple represents another important milestone in the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Canada. As Alberta's fourth temple and Canada's tenth, it will provide greater access to temple worship for members throughout southern Alberta while honoring the region's deep Latter-day Saint heritage. With construction progressing steadily and the exterior beginning to take shape, the temple continues moving toward the day it will open its doors to faithful members and the surrounding community.
