Announcement
The Lagos Nigeria Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2018 General Conference on October 7, 2018. It will become the second temple in Nigeria, following the Aba Nigeria Temple, and reflects the remarkable growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in one of Africa's fastest-growing Church populations. Today, Nigeria has seven temples in various stages of operation, construction, and planning, highlighting the country's continued spiritual growth.
Current Status
The Lagos Nigeria Temple is currently under construction. The Church announced the temple site on September 11, 2023, selecting a 2.7-acre property at the intersection of Rumens Road and Bourdillon Road in the Ikoyi neighborhood of Lagos.
The official exterior rendering was released on March 24, 2025, and groundbreaking services were held on May 10, 2025, with Elder Alfred Kyungu, President of the Africa West Area, presiding. Construction is now underway. Plans call for a single-story temple containing approximately 19,800 square feet. The temple complex will also include patron housing and an arrival center.
What to Watch for Next
As construction progresses, the next major milestones will include completion of the foundation and structural framework, installation of the temple's exterior finishes and central tower, interior construction, landscaping, and eventually the announcement of public open house and temple dedication dates.
Nearest Operating Temple
Until the Lagos Nigeria Temple is dedicated, members in southwestern Nigeria primarily attend the Aba Nigeria Temple, which was dedicated in 2005. Once completed, the Lagos Temple will significantly reduce travel for thousands of Latter-day Saints living in and around Nigeria's largest city while strengthening temple access throughout West Africa.
Final Thoughts
The Lagos Nigeria Temple represents another major milestone in the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Africa. As Nigeria's second temple, it will bring sacred temple ordinances much closer to members in one of the continent's largest metropolitan areas. With construction now underway, the project is steadily moving toward the day when this sacred house of the Lord will bless generations of faithful Saints throughout Lagos and beyond.
