Where It's Located
The Kyiv Ukraine Temple is located at 1 Yabluneva Street, Sofiivs'ka Borshchahivka, Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine, just southwest of central Kyiv. The temple sits on a 12.35-acre site and includes patron housing and a distribution center. Its beautifully landscaped grounds provide a peaceful setting for worship and reflection.
Getting There
The nearest major airport is Boryspil International Airport (KBP), located about 25 miles (40 km) east of the temple. Before the war in Ukraine, travelers from the United States could reach Kyiv with one-stop flights through major European hubs such as Warsaw, Frankfurt, Vienna, and Amsterdam. Due to the ongoing conflict, Ukraine's civilian airspace remains closed, so visitors currently travel through neighboring countries and continue into Ukraine by train or road when appropriate. Travel conditions should always be verified before making plans.
A Bit of History
The Kyiv Ukraine Temple was announced by President Gordon B. Hinckley on July 20, 1998. It became the first temple in Ukraine, the first temple in the former Soviet Union, and the eleventh temple built in Europe. The announcement came only a few years after the Church was officially established in independent Ukraine, highlighting the rapid growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the region.
Years before the announcement, on September 12, 1991, Elder Boyd K. Packer dedicated Ukraine for the preaching of the gospel and prophetically spoke of a day when "the spires of temples will be seen across this great land." That blessing was fulfilled less than two decades later with the dedication of the Kyiv Temple.
Groundbreaking services were held on June 23, 2007, with Elder Paul B. Pieper presiding. Following a two-week public open house, President Thomas S. Monson dedicated the temple on August 29, 2010, making it the 134th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 2011, the temple received first place for the best religious building constructed in Ukraine during 2010, an award presented by Ukraine's Ministry of Regional Development, Construction, Housing and Communal Services.
Design and Architecture
The Kyiv Ukraine Temple contains approximately 22,184 square feet of floor space. Its exterior is finished with Amarelo Macieira granite embedded with quartzite crystals that reflect sunlight, giving the temple a distinctive appearance. The design features a single attached central spire topped with an angel Moroni statue and rises approximately 138 feet above the surrounding landscape.
Inside, the temple includes two progressive instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The elegant interior and peaceful grounds provide a sacred place of worship for members from Ukraine and neighboring countries throughout Eastern Europe.
Final Thoughts
The Kyiv Ukraine Temple occupies a unique place in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As the first temple built in the former Soviet Union, it symbolizes the remarkable growth of the restored gospel in Eastern Europe following decades of religious restriction. Its beautiful architecture, historic significance, and enduring role in serving faithful members throughout the region make it one of the Church's most meaningful international temples.
