Announcement
The Kumasi Ghana Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2021 General Conference on April 4, 2021. It will become the second temple in Ghana, following the Accra Ghana Temple. Kumasi, known as "The Garden City" because of its lush vegetation, is Ghana's second-largest city and is located in the country's southern rainforest region. At the time of the announcement, Ghana was home to nearly 90,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in approximately 300 congregations, and Church membership has continued to grow significantly since then.
Current Status
The Kumasi Ghana Temple is currently under construction. The temple site was announced on May 1, 2023, and is located at Y11 Suntreso Road in the Bantama neighborhood of Kumasi. The temple will be built on a 2.08-acre site adjacent to the existing Bantama meetinghouse.
Groundbreaking services were held on October 18, 2025, with Elder Isaac K. Morrison, Second Counselor in the Africa West Area Presidency, presiding. Construction is now progressing, with excavation and foundation work underway. Plans call for a two-story temple of approximately 22,750 square feet that will include an arrival center.
What to Watch for Next
As construction continues, the next major milestones will include completion of the foundation, erection of the structural framework, installation of the exterior finishes, interior construction, landscaping, and eventually the announcement of public open house and temple dedication dates.
Nearest Operating Temple
Until the Kumasi Ghana Temple is dedicated, members in central and northern Ghana continue to attend the Accra Ghana Temple, which was dedicated in 2004. Once completed, the Kumasi temple will significantly reduce travel for thousands of Latter-day Saints throughout central and northern Ghana, as well as members from neighboring countries who will be assigned to its temple district.
Final Thoughts
The Kumasi Ghana Temple represents another important milestone in the remarkable growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in West Africa. As Ghana's second temple, it will make temple worship more accessible for thousands of faithful members while strengthening the Church's presence throughout the region. With construction now underway and foundation work in progress, the project continues to move steadily toward the day when this sacred house of the Lord will be dedicated.
