Where It's Located

The Kinshasa Democratic Republic of the Congo Temple is located at 51 Avenue de L'OUA, Quartier Basoko, Commune de Ngaliema, Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The temple sits on a beautiful 5-acre property next to the Kinshasa Stake Center. The grounds also include patron housing, an institute and seminary building, and a distribution center, all surrounded by landscaped gardens and a palm-lined entrance. There is no visitors' center or arrival center on site.

Getting There

The nearest major airport is N'djili International Airport (FIH), located about 18 miles (29 km) southeast of the temple. Travelers from the United States typically connect through international hubs such as Brussels, Paris, Addis Ababa, Istanbul, or Nairobi before arriving in Kinshasa. From the airport, the temple is approximately a 45- to 60-minute drive, depending on traffic.

A Bit of History

The Kinshasa Democratic Republic of the Congo Temple was announced by President Thomas S. Monson during the October 2011 General Conference on October 1, 2011. It became the first temple in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the fourth operating temple in Africa, and the first temple built in a French-speaking African nation. At the time of the announcement, many members traveled more than 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) to the Johannesburg South Africa Temple to participate in temple ordinances.

Groundbreaking services were held on February 12, 2016, with Elder Neil L. Andersen presiding. Following an 18-day public open house that welcomed thousands of visitors, Elder Dale G. Renlund dedicated the temple on April 14, 2019, making it the 163rd operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Since its dedication, the temple has served members across a vast portion of Central Africa, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Gabon. The temple district continues to expand as Church membership grows rapidly throughout the region.

Design and Architecture

The Kinshasa Democratic Republic of the Congo Temple contains approximately 12,000 square feet of floor space. Its exterior features a white plaster finish with a single attached end spire, creating a clean and elegant appearance that complements the tropical surroundings.

Inside, the temple includes one instruction room, one sealing room, and one baptistry. Though modest in size, it was carefully designed to meet the needs of a rapidly growing Church throughout Central Africa while providing a peaceful, sacred atmosphere for worship.

Final Thoughts

The Kinshasa Democratic Republic of the Congo Temple represents a historic milestone in the growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Africa. As the first temple in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the first in French-speaking Africa, it has brought temple blessings dramatically closer to tens of thousands of faithful members throughout Central Africa. Its beautiful setting, historic significance, and continued service to a rapidly growing Church make it one of the most important temples on the African continent.
