Kahului Hawaii Temple: History, Unique Features, and Visitor Guide

The Kahului Hawaii Temple is one of the newest temples announced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Located on the island of Maui, it will become the first temple ever built on Maui and the third announced temple in Hawaii at the time of its announcement. Once completed, it will make temple worship much more accessible for thousands of Latter-day Saints living on the Valley Isle.

A Brief History

President Russell M. Nelson announced the Kahului Hawaii Temple during the October 2023 General Conference on October 1, 2023. At the time of the announcement, Hawaii was home to nearly 75,000 members in 145 congregations, including more than 4,500 members on the island of Maui. The announcement came just weeks after the devastating Lahaina wildfires, offering hope and encouragement to many members across the island.

On January 20, 2026, the Church announced the temple site on a 7.6-acre property along Kuikahi Drive, adjacent to an existing meetinghouse at 1300 Maui Lani Parkway in Kahului. Plans call for a single-story temple of approximately 19,000 square feet with an accompanying ancillary building. The temple is currently in the planning phase, and a groundbreaking date has not yet been announced.

What Makes This Temple Unique?

The Kahului Hawaii Temple's most significant distinction is that it will be the first temple ever built on the island of Maui. For many years, members on Maui have traveled by airplane to attend temples on Oahu or the Big Island. Once completed, the new temple will dramatically reduce travel time and make regular temple attendance much easier for local members.

Another unique aspect is its location in the heart of Kahului, Maui's commercial center. Surrounded by breathtaking mountains, lush tropical landscapes, and the Pacific Ocean, the temple will stand in one of the most beautiful settings in the Church while serving members from communities across the island.

Although an official rendering has not yet been released, plans call for a modest single-story temple that reflects the Church's ongoing effort to bring temples closer to members throughout the world.

Visiting the Temple

The future Kahului Hawaii Temple will be located on Kuikahi Drive, next to the meetinghouse at 1300 Maui Lani Parkway in Kahului, Hawaii. Because the temple is still in the planning stage, it is not yet open to the public. Before its dedication, the Church will host a public open house, allowing visitors to tour the temple and learn more about its sacred purpose.
