João Pessoa Brazil Temple: What We Know So Far

Announcement

The João Pessoa Brazil Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2023 General Conference on October 1, 2023. It will become the first temple in the Brazilian state of Paraíba and was the 22nd temple announced for Brazil. João Pessoa, a coastal city in northeastern Brazil, is the capital of Paraíba and one of the oldest cities in the Americas. At the time of the announcement, Brazil was home to nearly 1.5 million members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in approximately 2,175 congregations.

Current Status

The João Pessoa Brazil Temple is currently under construction. The temple site was announced on November 20, 2023, and is located on a 3.9-acre property at the intersection of Rua Paulino Pinto and Avenida Ministro José Américo de Almeida in the Cabo Branco neighborhood of João Pessoa.

The official exterior rendering was released on July 8, 2024, and groundbreaking services were held on January 24, 2026, with Elder Joni L. Koch, President of the Brazil Area, presiding. Construction crews are currently completing foundation work, including excavation, grading, pile installation, and concrete footings for both the temple and supporting buildings.

Plans call for a single-story temple containing approximately 18,850 square feet. The design features a single attached central spire and will serve members throughout Paraíba and surrounding areas.

What to Watch for Next

With the foundation now taking shape, the next major milestones will include construction of the temple's structural framework, exterior stonework, installation of the spire, interior finishing, and landscaping. After construction is complete, the Church will announce dates for the public open house and temple dedication.

Nearest Operating Temple

Until the João Pessoa Brazil Temple is dedicated, members in Paraíba primarily attend the Recife Brazil Temple, located about 75 miles (120 km) to the south. Once completed, the new temple will greatly reduce travel for thousands of Latter-day Saints living throughout northeastern Brazil.

Final Thoughts

The João Pessoa Brazil Temple marks a historic milestone for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in northeastern Brazil. As the first temple in Paraíba, it will bring temple blessings much closer to thousands of faithful members. With construction now underway and visible progress being made on the foundations, the project is steadily moving toward the day when this sacred house of the Lord will be dedicated and opened for worship.
