Announcement
The Jakarta Indonesia Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2023 General Conference on April 2, 2023. It will become the first temple in Indonesia, marking a historic milestone for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the world's fourth-most populous country. At the time of the announcement, Indonesia was home to approximately 7,500 members in nearly 25 congregations, with Church history in the country dating back to the arrival of the first missionaries in 1970.
Current Status
The Jakarta Indonesia Temple is currently in the planning and approval phase. On March 4, 2024, the Church announced the temple site at Synthesis Square, Jalan Gatot Subroto No. 177A, in the Tebet District of South Jakarta. On December 8, 2025, the Church released the official exterior rendering of the temple.
Plans call for a multi-story temple containing approximately 50,000 square feet. The temple complex will also include an arrival facility, a meetinghouse, and patron housing. The design features a central spire surrounded by four smaller spires, creating a distinctive architectural profile. As of now, no groundbreaking date has been announced.
What to Watch for Next
The next major milestone will be the announcement of the temple's groundbreaking ceremony. Once construction begins, the Church will provide updates throughout the building process before announcing dates for the public open house and temple dedication.
Nearest Operating Temple
Until the Jakarta Indonesia Temple is completed, members in Indonesia generally travel to the Singapore Temple, the Hong Kong China Temple, or the Manila Philippines Temple, depending on their location and travel circumstances. The new temple will eliminate the need for many Indonesian members to travel internationally to receive temple ordinances, greatly improving accessibility for Latter-day Saints throughout the country.
Final Thoughts
The Jakarta Indonesia Temple represents a historic step forward for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Indonesia. As the nation's first temple, it will bless thousands of members who have faithfully traveled abroad for temple worship for many years. With the temple site selected and the official rendering released, the project continues to move steadily toward construction and, eventually, the dedication of Indonesia's first house of the Lord.
