The Idaho Falls Idaho Temple was the first temple built in Idaho and is one of the Church's most recognizable temples. Situated along the banks of the Snake River beside the city's famous waterfalls, the temple has been a landmark of eastern Idaho since its dedication in 1945. Its striking central spire and beautiful riverfront setting make it one of the most photographed temples in the world.
A Brief History
President Heber J. Grant announced the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple on March 3, 1937, making it the first temple to be constructed in Idaho. Groundbreaking took place on December 19, 1939, with David Smith presiding, and the temple site was dedicated by David O. McKay in October 1940. Construction was delayed by World War II, as material shortages extended the project by several years.
Following a five-day public open house, President George Albert Smith dedicated the temple on September 23–25, 1945, making it the eighth operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. More recently, the temple underwent a major two-year renovation and was rededicated by President Henry B. Eyring on June 4, 2017, after extensive structural and interior improvements.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
One of the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple's most remarkable features is its location overlooking the Snake River and the waterfalls that gave the city its name. Just east of the temple is a beautiful Visitors' Center featuring exhibits, films, and a replica of Bertel Thorvaldsen's famous Christus statue, making it a favorite stop for visitors from around the world.
The temple is also historically significant because it was the first temple designed with a central spire, beginning a design style that would influence many future temples. Architect John Fetzer reportedly based his design on a vision of an ancient Nephite temple after praying for inspiration.
Inside, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple is one of only a handful of temples that still features four progressive ordinance rooms with beautiful hand-painted murals. It is also one of the very few temples with a mural in the Celestial Room, making its interior especially unique among Church temples.
Visiting the Temple
The Idaho Falls Idaho Temple is located at 1000 Memorial Drive in Idaho Falls, Idaho. The temple has an on-site Visitors' Center, but no arrival center or patron housing. The surrounding riverwalk, waterfalls, landscaped grounds, and nearby greenbelt make it one of the most scenic temple locations in the Church.
