The Huntsville Alabama Temple is one of the newest temples announced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Located in Madison, just west of Huntsville, the temple will become the second temple in Alabama and will serve members throughout northern Alabama and parts of southern Tennessee. Once completed, it will bring temple worship much closer to thousands of Latter-day Saints in one of the fastest-growing regions of the Southeast.
A Brief History
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Huntsville Alabama Temple during the October 2024 General Conference on October 6, 2024. At the time, Alabama was home to more than 40,000 members of the Church in approximately 75 congregations. The new temple became the second announced for the state, joining the Birmingham Alabama Temple.
On January 21, 2025, the Church announced the temple site on a 21-acre property near the intersection of Gillespie Road and Browns Ferry Road in Madison, Alabama. An official rendering was released on April 22, 2025, showcasing a beautiful single-story temple with a central tower. The groundbreaking is scheduled for August 15, 2026, with Elder John D. Amos presiding.
What Makes This Temple Unique?
One of the Huntsville Alabama Temple's most unique features is its location in the heart of Rocket City. Huntsville is home to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, and one of the nation's largest aerospace and technology communities. The temple will stand in a city known for innovation while serving as a peaceful place of worship and reflection.
The temple's official rendering shows an elegant single-story design with a 122-foot central tower. Plans call for approximately 22,700 square feet of space, making it significantly larger than many recently announced temples while maintaining a graceful architectural style.
Another significant aspect of the temple is its impact on local members. For many years, members in northern Alabama have traveled to the Birmingham Alabama Temple or the Nashville Tennessee Temple. Once completed, the Huntsville Alabama Temple will greatly reduce travel time and make temple worship more accessible for thousands of families.
Visiting the Temple
The future Huntsville Alabama Temple will be located near the intersection of Gillespie Road and Browns Ferry Road in Madison, Alabama. Since construction has not yet begun, the temple is not open to the public. Before its dedication, the Church will host a public open house, allowing visitors to tour the temple and learn more about its sacred purpose.
