Announcement
The Huehuetenango Guatemala Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2022 General Conference on October 2, 2022. It will become the fifth temple in Guatemala, reflecting the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the country. At the time of the announcement, Guatemala was home to more than 284,000 members in 436 congregations.
Current Status
The Huehuetenango Guatemala Temple is currently under construction. The temple site, announced on March 20, 2023, is located at 18 Avenida, Zona 4, El Terrero, directly across from the Barrio Sión (Zion Ward) meetinghouse in Huehuetenango.
An official exterior rendering was released on May 13, 2024, and groundbreaking services were held on March 14, 2026, with Elder Patricio M. Giuffra, President of the Central America Area, presiding. Construction is now underway.
Plans call for a single-story temple containing approximately 10,787 square feet. The temple will feature a single attached central tower and include one instruction room, one sealing room, and one baptistry.
What to Watch for Next
With construction now in progress, the next major milestones will include completion of the exterior structure, interior finishing work, landscaping, and eventually the announcement of the public open house and temple dedication dates.
Nearest Operating Temple
Until the Huehuetenango Guatemala Temple is dedicated, members in western Guatemala continue to attend the Quetzaltenango Guatemala Temple, which currently serves several stakes and districts in the region, including multiple stakes in Huehuetenango. Once completed, the new temple will greatly reduce travel for thousands of Latter-day Saints in Guatemala's western highlands.
Final Thoughts
The Huehuetenango Guatemala Temple represents another important milestone in the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Guatemala. As construction progresses, it will bring temple blessings much closer to members living in the country's western highlands. Its convenient location, modern design, and growing progress make it one of the most anticipated temple projects in Central America.
