Huancayo Peru Temple: What We Know So Far

Announcement

The Huancayo Peru Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2023 General Conference on October 1, 2023. It will become the first temple in Peru's Junín Region and the ninth temple announced for Peru. Huancayo, whose name means "place of the rock" in the Quechua language, is located about 190 miles (305 km) east of Lima in the Peruvian highlands.

Current Status

The Huancayo Peru Temple is currently in the planning and approval phase. At this time, no official temple site has been announced, no exterior rendering has been released, and no groundbreaking date has been scheduled. Church leaders continue working through the early planning process before additional details are made public.

What to Watch for Next

The next major milestones will be the announcement of the temple site, followed by the release of the official exterior rendering. After those announcements, the Church will schedule a groundbreaking ceremony before construction begins. Once the temple is completed, dates for the public open house and dedication will be announced.

Nearest Operating Temple

Until the Huancayo Peru Temple is completed, members in the Junín Region primarily travel to the Lima Peru Temple to participate in temple ordinances. The new temple will significantly reduce travel time for thousands of Latter-day Saints living in central Peru and will strengthen the Church's growing presence throughout the country.

Final Thoughts

The Huancayo Peru Temple represents another important milestone in the continued growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Peru. As the first temple planned for the Junín Region, it will bring temple blessings much closer to members in central Peru. Although the project is still in its earliest stages, its announcement reflects the Church's ongoing commitment to making temple worship more accessible around the world.
