Hamburg Germany Temple: What We Know So Far

Announcement

The Hamburg Germany Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2023 General Conference on April 2, 2023. It will become the third temple in Germany, joining the Freiberg Germany Temple and the Frankfurt Germany Temple. At the time of the announcement, Germany was home to nearly 40,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in about 150 congregations.

Current Status

The Hamburg Germany Temple is currently in the planning and approval phase. On June 15, 2026, the Church announced that the temple will be built on a 1.4-acre site at Wartenau 20 in Hamburg, where the Hamburg Ward meetinghouse is currently located.

At this time, no official exterior rendering has been released, and no groundbreaking date has been announced. Church leaders continue to work with local authorities as planning for the project moves forward.

What to Watch for Next

The next major milestones will be the release of the temple's official exterior rendering and the announcement of a groundbreaking ceremony. Once construction begins, the Church will provide updates on the project's progress before announcing dates for the public open house and temple dedication.

Nearest Operating Temple

Until the Hamburg Germany Temple is completed, members in northern Germany are primarily served by the Frankfurt Germany Temple, which is nearly a five-hour drive from Hamburg. Members may also attend the Freiberg Germany Temple, depending on where they live. The new temple will significantly reduce travel for Latter-day Saints throughout northern Germany.

Final Thoughts

The Hamburg Germany Temple represents an important milestone for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Germany. As the first temple to be announced and planned in Germany since the country's reunification, it will bring temple blessings much closer to members throughout the north while continuing the Church's steady growth across Central Europe. Although the project is still in its planning stages, the announcement of the temple site marks significant progress toward the construction of Germany's third house of the Lord.
