A Bit of History
The Guayaquil Ecuador Temple was announced on March 31, 1982, under the direction of President Spencer W. Kimball. It became the first temple in Ecuador and was a significant milestone for the rapidly growing Church in the country.
Although the temple was announced in 1982, groundbreaking did not take place until August 10, 1996, with Elder Richard G. Scott presiding. The 14-year gap between announcement and groundbreaking remains one of the longest in modern temple history.
Following a public open house from June 23 through July 17, 1999, President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the temple on August 1–2, 1999, making it the 58th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Today, the temple serves dozens of stakes and districts across southern Ecuador.
Design and Architecture
The Guayaquil Ecuador Temple contains approximately 70,884 square feet of floor space. Its exterior is finished with Asa Branca Brazilian granite and features a single attached end spire topped with an angel Moroni statue. The temple's elegant design makes it one of the largest temples built during its era.
Inside, the temple includes four instruction rooms, four sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The spacious interior and beautifully landscaped grounds create a peaceful atmosphere for members traveling from throughout Ecuador.
Final Thoughts
The Guayaquil Ecuador Temple holds a special place in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as Ecuador's first temple. For more than two decades, it has served members across southern Ecuador while standing as a symbol of the Church's continued growth in South America. Its beautiful granite exterior, impressive architecture, and historic significance make it a memorable destination for anyone visiting Latter-day Saint temples in Latin America.
